Hope

Did I almost give up hope? Nearly, the pain of our love, each parting a small death; the hours apart endured, heavy slow; the highlight of the day, the public telephone. Just for a few minutes to hear your voice – to hear and say “I love you. See you when?”. Your name brought into every conversation; just to say your name, a joy, hugged to myself. I love you. How many years? Eleven, yes eleven. From heights of joy to depths of anguish. How did it survive those years, that love of ours? Until that day we were one. Tempered by such emotions there is a love that will not die, will not let go; that even death can’t conquer. Will I give up hope? Not now! And from the other side of death, months that feel like years… now I do not need a telephone, still, your name spoken so many times a day; this time I know the time will come again. No, I will never give up hope.
